Vegemite sambo
My houseguest brought me vegemite on my insistance. I’d never had it before. It tastes like a wet Oxo cube, but does lift the blandness of a cheese like Wensleydale nicely – if used sparingly (on buttered toast). I think I tried Marmite once as a kid and hated it. So what’s the difference between Marmite and Vegemite? All is revealed.
re: toast. Toast is good. Toast is heaven. Too bad Dutch bread is really sliced too thinly for proper toast. See, you need to get the outside of the bread crisp ‘n’ toasted, and leave the inside soft. That doesn’t happen with Dutch bread. It just goes papery.
The Dutch don’t use a toaster because they love the taste of toast. No. The Dutch use a toaster to make use of the bread that’s gone old so as not to waste it. (That would be sinful.) Just like we scrape the last bit of the yoghurt out of our bottles with a specially made rubber scrapey thingy.
I love getting me buttered toast & a cuppa in the morning – but to get it I need to get bread from Marks ‘n’ Spencers, thickly sliced for that purpose. I have until December, when they close.

Isn’t self-sliced-bread an option?

No. :)
I can’t cut evenly. It has to be even.

Vegemite is just plain discusting. Tastes like a beef bullion cube. I guess you have to be raised on it to be able to eat it with a straight face. Now strawberry jam on buttered toast, that’s nearly heaven.

Sparingly’s the way to do it. Americans seem to find Vegemite particularly obnoxious, but that maybe because they’re in the habit of slapping excessive amounts of it on their bread or toast like it’s peanut butter or something. Also, being brought up on it helps too. :)
I sometimes use vegemite in cooking (again, sparingly) in place of a stock cube.

My mood switches between Marmite and Vegemite on a six-monthly basis. The saltiness of Marmite makes it a great complement to scrambled eggs on toast, but I still love a Vegemite sandwich. And yes, sparingly sparingly.

I happen to love just butter on bread…just butter. is that wrong? haha.
I do agree to crispness on the outer area and soft where the butter melts for the mid/inner area. that’s just heaven. especially with italian bread. I love italian bread with the little sesame seeds on the crust.

I’m a vegemite kid through and through. Have been ever since the days when Vegemite was owned by an Australian company and our mums really believed that it put a rose in every cheek (may need to be an Aussie to get that)There is nothing on earth that can match the tase of a nice smear of vegemite on fresh buttered crusty bread. (and did you know if you’ve got mouth ulcers a few dabs a day and it will heal them?)
