Honestly, the things people text to me from the wilds of Borneo: “Bhi beirt fir IRA, Jim agus Tom ag rith sios an Falls Rd. Chonaic siad fear in a shui. Duirt Jim: ‘An gceapann tu go bhuil fear seo ins an UVF?’ Duirt Tom: ‘Knee cheapim!’” The scary thing? I ‘got’ it.

Translation and explanation: “Two IRA men are walking down the Falls Road. They see a man on the corner. Says Jim: “Do you think that man is in the UVF?” Says Tom: “Knee cheapim.”
The Irish negative answer to “An gceapann tu” (’do you think’) is “Ní cheapim” (’no, I don’t think’) - which kind of sounds like ‘knee-cap him’…

Have you ever read any Ulster-Scots? That is very different. They never taught us Gaelic at our school, it’s a language I wouldn’t mind knowing a bit about.

I’ve seen Scots Gaelic, but not Ulster-Scots. Will investigate.
