God

I’m sorry, but “Weill interpreter and rock god” just makes me giggle. We had a talk about ‘celebrity’ recently — on account of him getting more press now than he did in 7 years with Island Records. It’s a part of this artist’s life that is as annoying as it is exciting to me. It is a separate animal. A beast that he walks on a leash. It barks at me sometimes.

I am hypocritical about it, it being ‘fame’, ‘celebrity’. I will lap up the goss in PopBitch on any artist, but I’ll throw a tantrum when he’s involved and literally feel sick to my stomach when the tabloids have a go at him. I cannot pinpoint, as I told him last week, the exact date that he went from cult artist to ‘celebrity’. (But I do blame Adam.) It’s there now, I have to live with it, it’s unlikely to go away any time soon. Between us, it means nothing. It is not how we relate. He doesn’t take it too seriously — it’s the ‘day job’. When he puts a record out, will they take notice, will it mean more publicity, more critical acclaim? They’ll talk about the launch party, but they won’t listen to the record. The refreshing thing is that he is aware and wary, and admits to using the press to keep his profile up in barren times.

“when” he puts a record out? Not “if” he puts a record out??? I like your OPTIMISM.

  2. Believe me, optimism is something we need right now, she said gloomily.
