Rickie Lee Jones’
Rickie Lee Jones’ new album was recommended to me by a man of good taste. (When I said I wasn’t sure I liked her I was asked: “Oh, because she’s a girl?” Let me state this here now: I do like female singers. Can’t think of any right now, but I do. ) Has anyone heard it? Don’t think she’ll be playing at a republican convention any time soon: Singer Lee Jones attacks Bush.
"I didn’t know I was this geeky until I discovered the online world through my office’s 2400 baud modem back in ’93."

Haven’t heard any RLJ at all, apart from the sample of her voice on The Orb’s ‘Little Fluffy Clouds’.
You like Joss Stone, for a start.
I listened to samples of the RLJ album on amazon.com and wasn’t impress. She’s got one of those girlie voices I can’t stand.
I’ve been working for her label for the last five months, Caroline — every US critic who got a copy of the album got one because I stuffed it in an envelope. ;-D If you do feel curious again, I can probably get you a copy no problem…
(Oh, and you like Sinead, who, last time I checked, is female. It’s probably only a matter of time at her rate-of-controversy, however.)
I take your point on her voice, though — it took me a very, very long time to get used to it.
My (otherwise spot-on) brother-in-law thinks that I’m weird for believing that Sinead is one of the most beautiful women in the world, because “she looks like a boy”.
On a related subject, I’m having voice issues with my current Joni Mitchell exploration. Lyrics brilliant, music nice enough, voice… ugh. Frustrating. Hoping similarly to get used to it after a few more plays.
I was introduced to her music by a co-worker sometime around ’96, and find it ok, but much prefer Joni Mitchell. Blue is a classic that will never leave my collection.
There is a great live version of Lyle Lovett (from the live in Texas album) singing North Dakota with RLJ, much better than the studio version.
