Gopher and co

Ah, the good old days. Wired talks about Gopher — apparently still alive and kicking. There was another thing at the time, used to find software. I think it had a similar cute name, which I used quite a bit. I can’t think of the name. Help?

… oh there it is, it just popped into my head: Archie. A quick search gives me this “archie servers do not exist any more.” Aw.

    … was Hotwire the ‘community’ set up by Wired? That was probably the first ever ‘community’ I joined. I had no idea what it was all about but it looked cool.

    No, Hotwire was a p2p mac client/server thingie. Basically Limewire before the whole filesharing thing. You once gave me a copy of the app! ;-)

    I was gonna say. Hotline. The Big Red H. Came long, long after Archie and Gopher, though. I used Hotline a lot.

    Heh, I remember that now, giving you the installer. I think when they started serving ads, or something.
