Choose Irish, choose Shag

· Comments (14)

Irish music magazine Hot Press are doing the Top 100 Greatest Irish albums poll and have shortlisted a number of albums. The list includes the Virgin Prunes' ... If I Die, I Die, but criminally ignores Gavin Friday's beguiling solo works: 'Each Man Kills the Thing He Loves' (Island Records, 1989), 'Adam 'n' Eve' (Island Records, 1992) and 'Shag Tobacco' (Island Records, 1995).

I am mobilising all GF fans to add Shag Tobacco as their personal choice in the poll. And now I'm asking you, faithful readers of prolific.org, to do the same. You can pick 4 other albums from the list, or add them too. It would be lovely if you could throw a vote towards '...If I Die, I Die'.

Voting requires membership to the site, but you can get a special day pass just to vote.

Thank you, it means a lot to me. Drop a note in the comment box when you've voted and I'll raffle a Gavin Friday album among you.

Done. Though I have to admit I didn't place him at the top of my list. And I like his first album better, which has a lot to do with seeing them perform it at the time.

Done. But don't bother including me in the raffle, since I've already got all three albums. Unless you're raffling something awesome and rare, in which case... ;-D

I'd probably pick Each Man too, IJsbrand, but I thought focusing on one album would be best and the Yanks are more keen on Shag. (Actually, they might be more keen on Adam 'n' Eve, which got better promotion at the time.)

Heaven mailing list, 250 members. Check. GFN mailing list, 1000 members. Check. U2log.com, 3000 (?) daily readers. Check. Whedonesque's Libary.... um, 10 to 300 (?) Check. Prolific.org... a handful. check. I've done my bit.

done! It's really a shame that the Gavin records are "write in" votes....

The VP of Universal/Island/Def Jam promotion of a very large country wrote in to say it is *wrong* Gav's not listed, that Shag T is in his top 10 best albums of the century and that working the album was his pleasure, and seeing Gav 5x on that tour was amazing, 'by far the best club gig I have seen to date'. So there. :-)

Shag Tobacco is fine, fine, fine. I spent one holiday listening to a friend's copy continuously...then flew back to Japan and didn't get a copy. Stupid, stupid, stupid. It was at the top of my list. With Ash, U2, Virgin Prunes and Van Morrison following...but not in that order, I think.
