Patronising since the late 90s

Jason Kottke has quit his web design job to do Kottke.org full time.

(pregnant pause)

He’s asking for people to sponsor him (instead of taking on site advertising). It’s crazy and awesome. I’ve enjoyed 0sil8 and kottke.org since the dawn of time, so why the hell not:

I’m a kottke.org micropatron.

Good luck with that, Jason. Meanwhile, Vaughan will blog for MicroCompliments. He’s wonderful, that Vaughan.

I am pretty excited about it – 0sil8 probably ranked #1 in my list of favourites for a very long time, even after it was defunct. I am crossing my fingers that we see more of that kind of goodness – but if we don’t, I’m still excited about this opportunity for him.

Hi Brianna, I’d just been to your site for the first time in a while, after seeing your name in the patron list. :-)

I’m intrigued by the vitriol that he’s getting for doing this. To my mind, it’s a brave experiment, he’s being open and honest about it, and I find myself strongly hoping that he pulls it off.

I won’t be donating, ‘cos I don’t read him. If I did read him, I’d cough up without a second thought.

Haven’t read any vitriol yet, but not surprised. That kind of unreasonable anger goes back to the times of the orginal ‘cabal’ (there IS no cabal), back when there were about 10 interesting sites online (zeldman, powazek, kottke, glassdog, etc) and ‘collaborative websites’ were the buzz word (95, 96, 97, 98).
