Ordinary addictions
If you'd like to know why I keep jetting off at the drop off a hat to see a relatively unknown artist perform in all corners of the world, check out the video stream (smil, Real Video) of the gig I went to see in Dingle late last year, which has now been put online by the lovely people at RTE Ireland. The full stream is 35 minutes, but for the best impression scroll to the 20 minute mark and start from there ('Caruso' and 'Rags to Riches'). This is the first video footage of some substance since 1989, and the director and his team did a great job.
Watched this earlier this morning—Rags to Riches is remarkable! Wish I’d been able to jet over to Dingle myself last December. I agree the video footage is very well done, and the sound was great.
But what’s this about working on a new studio album? Uh, how long has he been saying that? I’m not holding my breath.

It’s more than wonderful to have something so that when people say “Why?”, I can say “Here.” Especially something so good.
A remarkable man, several remarkable men, and it was great to see RTÉ giving them the props they deserve.

They left out Melancholy Baby – and rightly so, because it was a mess.
Gav thought they might only show a couple of songs, but he got more airtime than all of the other artists (except Steve Earle, who did a full night on his own)
I talked with the director of the show yesterday and he hadn’t seen the footage yet, but was well chuffed with my praise. :-) I have to add that the way you see the show was 90% the way they shot it on the night, very little post editing. He’s a damn good director – but in all fairness, Gavin explained all of the songs of them and the way he wanted them filmed. The director took 6 pages of notes. Usually he takes on half a page. He told me of all the artists he’s filmed at Other Voices, Gavin was the only one who had any sense of TV and how things should be filmed.

I think it’s great that Gav’ left very little to chance – even better that the director listened to him. It was easy to get the sense that that’s how it was on the night as well, which is part of what made it so special I think – there’ve been a couple of the ‘Other Voices’ where it seems very very tidy and tucked away with no loose ends, and loses a bit of the live feel.
