Stupid people at the zoo

I saw a dad encouraging his daughter to feed an Anoa, eventhough a sign said to keep clear. When the Anoa did not respond because it was tending to its hide, the dad pulled the animal by its horns. I was almost hoping the litle cow would bite the kid to teach dad a lesson.

Elsewhere, a sign on the indoor bird house asked visitors to remain quiet, since the Hornbill is breeding. The female is sealed inside a tree trunk and the male waits outside and feeds her. All the kids were screaming and the parents weren't exactly quiet either.

Another guy was taking photographs of an orang utan through the glass of its cage. It was sitting very close to the glass, looking unhappy as orang utans do. The guy stuck his little camera right in the animal's face and used flash. Repeatedly. I should have done the same to him.

Stupid people everywhere. But perhaps not as criminally stupid as this family that got two bears killed because one of the bears may or may not have bitten their 4-year old after the kid and one of its parents CLIMBED OVER THE FENCE around the bear enclosure.

Let me tell you about Myfanwy

Some of you may remember I had a little scare concerning my plumbing. It appeared I had a passenger riding my tube. Well, they've prodded me and pricked me and the plumber's assistent put their fingers up Myfanwy. I answered inappropriate questions that were read out to me from the hospital's intranet. I answered unnecessary questions because they did not listen to my earlier answers. I gave blood and I worried for a few weeks, but at last the plumber has spoken: I'm fine, it's benign, come back in three months time.

All Consuming Weekend

Films I saw or tried to watch this weekend:
  • I walk the line: 'And take the pills.' Joaquin Phoenix is highly watchable channelling Johnny Cash, but the film felt a little too much like a tv/mini series to me.
  • North Country: 'Life is tough when yer a miner girl.' Very 'Silkwood', in fact Charlize Theron might just be the new Meryl Streep.
  • The Matador: 'Bond. Not Bond.' Eye-opening performance by Pierce Brosnan, great support from Greg Kinnear. I fell asleep 3/4 through the film, must watch the end soon.
  • Walllace and Gromit and the Curse of the Were Rabbit: Gave up after five minutes. Not in the mood for clay-silliness.

I'm looking for a good book to read after Banville's The Sea and McEwan's Saturday. Any suggestions?

OMG I just scored two tickets for Morrissey in Amsterdam on April 10.

*fans self*

It's been 22 years since he last played here.

I can see clearly now

Spending money before you've got it... to be able to earn it. That's what I did today. I have been working on a website for a colleague the last couple of weekends. It's been tough because the house has been drafty and cold - not the ideal circumstances to sit still in - but also because my old LG monitor was getting old in the teeth and very blurry in some areas of the screen. I was squinting too much and it was tiring. So I went to a computer hardware store this morning to buy myself a TFT-monitor.

I hadn't really prepared for it, all I knew was I wanted 'a black one' and I wanted it fast.

In the shop I pointed out their cheapest Acer monitor and asked if it was available in black. It wasn't. So I pointed to the dearer black Iiyama ProLite E431s and said: 'Ok, gimme that one.' They came back with a box, I pulled my credit card, cussed when they charged 1.5% extra for the use of the card ($&#*!! bloody annoying country...)

Then I rushed back home to connect the thing and start working. On the tram I thought to myself... 'wouldn't it be typical if they'd sold me a silver coloured monitor?'

Well, they did.

But fuck it, at least I can see what I'm doing now.
