The Church: still soldiering on

· Comments (0)

Where do rockbands go when they grow old? The small room upstairs at the Paradiso.

It's unfair perhaps and it must smart, but The Church soldiers on. All the good bands do. Whether you perform in front of thousands or in someone's living room, you play as if it's your last show.

I go see young bands, I go see the big names, I go to club gigs, I - reluctantly - enter stadiums to watch the megas. And I get jaded about concerts and complain I'm not getting what I need from them, most of the time.

Young bands especially, I find, have no stage craft and no mystique. (There's always exceptions - Arcade Fire for example have plenty of both.) I want bands and their frontmen in particular to make me believe. Believe them. Believe something. I like to see bands play because they need to, not because they want to.

I go see bands full of expectations and come away disappointed a lot of the time. So when I went to see The Church I expected them well past their heyday, coasting on past glory. Instead I watched four guys soldiering on with more fire in the belly than a lot of the new 'The'-bands put together. Overcoming ridiculous technical problems, they played blistering versions of songs from their vast repertoire.

Steve Kilbey - The Church

Frontman Steve Kilbey, past the pretty but sporting a distinguished bearded look, still oozes star quality despite the weary, dog-tired I'm-too-old-for-this-game vibe that surrounds him. He commanded the room. How do I know this? He asked people to lay off the ciggies because they hurt his throat. Dutch people don't like to be told 'no'. But they obeyed. And when the pauses between songs became longer and longer while the drummer and techs tried to rid the stage of a persistent buzzing, nobody complained. Kilbey made up stories to pass time, people listened.

I left the Paradiso floating several feet above the ground and with a keen, renewed, interest in the band. I spent the weekend gorging information, properly obsessing and hungry for the chime of Peter Koppes and Marty Willson-Piper's riffs.

Next time, give them back the big room, Paradiso.

A friend invited me to facebook. I had previously decided not to join, but what the hell, I click on the link and fill in the registration form...

... and I'm informed my name 'contains too many words'.

Scottish indie-popsters didn't steal my heart and didn't seem to make an effort trying either. The word 'dour' is probably overused in connection with 'Scottish', but you know the thing about cliches? They tend to have some truth in them. Some catchy tunes, too many filler songs. Not much action on stage so little chance of a spectacular photograph... hence the standard three-in-a-row.

Build a well for Bono

No, not to throw him in, don't be cruel.

Phil Romans has organised the 2nd photo auction in support of the African Well Fund's 'Build a Well for Bono's Birthday'. Last year, his efforts raised $11,000 for the charity.

The African Well Fund is a registered 501(c)3 non-profit organization that was founded in 2002 by a group of U2 fans. Since that time, AWF has raised more than $300,000, which has been used to fund clean water projects that have benefited over 60,000 people in sub-Saharan Africa.

Nineteen U2 fans and photographers (including myself) have donated over 100 pictures of the band (and one of one of their best friends) to be auctioned off on eBay. All proceeds will be donated to the 5th Annual Build a Well for Bono's Birthday fundraising drive.

The photo auction starts April 14th, and will last for 7 days. The first auction starts at 12pm EST, and each auction will subsequently start at one minute increments.

Go check out the photos and put in your bids. If I may make a suggestion: this photograph by some Dutch woman would be a fine choice.

Having just installed a new TV (the one I had, relatively new, died in an electrical surge that hit our house - it also killed my digital settop box), I ventured onto some local digital TV forums and was delighted to read that UPC will soon (this summer) be carrying NBC's Sci-Fi channel. It's going to be a localised version, so I don't know what exactly they'll be showing, but it'll make me hang on to my digital subscription for sure.

Ah... more information:

In its opening month Sci-Fi will screen Star Trek: The Original Series, Star Trek: The Next Generation, New Battlestar Galactica, Tremors, Sliders and Dark Angel.

13th street isn't sounding too bad either. Cracker!
