Yeah, Ianto was good in the first series because there was a sense of mystery: the dark horse, still waters running deep, etc. I hope they don't lose that. The worst thing that could happen to his character is that he turns into Much out of Robin Hood, always whining about how his master doesn't love him enough.

Yeah, angst makes good telly. But they're kind of stuck with a lead actor who can't do angst very well.

I'm not keen on Gwen, she shouts too much, so I was glad she was paralysed for most of the episode :-)

They're apparently giving Ianto more work this season, which is good, I like him.

I watched it with my mum, who's a big Who, Star Trek & Buffy fan. It was the first time she'd seen it, so I had that seeing-it-through-the-other-person's-eyes thing going on.

It all seemed rather silly and camp, nowhere near as sharp and sexy as either Who or Buffy. Too much action, not enough plot.

Gwen is definitely the star of the show, as far as that particular story is concerned. And she spent half the episode lying on the floor paralysed.

I fear for Torchwood. In an interview that I read last week, RTD said that now they've got over the first-series hurdle of knowing whether it was going to work or not, the second series is lighter, with less angst. But, like Buffy and Who, it was the angst that gave it depth...

What really ticked me off was, apart from stunt casting in the first place, the way they made James Marsters the star of the show in all the promo stuff. That's not a nice thing to do to your ensemble cast. It's saying 'we have no faith in your star power' and 'we really, really, really want to make this an even bigger hit on BBC America'.

Also... that wasn't a new character. The writer just wrote Spike.

It was definitely funnier than last season. Now all they need to work on is delivery. Barrowman has the oddest timing, and not in a good way.

Hmm indeed. I'm not sure whether I liked that or not. What I didn't like - always my perennial moan with the new Who too - was the 50 min episode length. They should have kept it at one hour.
