And where's my Cordy? @DYFL Started on Runaways a while back, with Whedon's run on it, but then I decided to go back and start with the beginning of the series. So I've been reading the TPB's from issue #1. They are kind of hard to get here, so I picked a few issues up in Dublin and ordered the rest from TFAW.com. Your next stop, whether you know it or not, is Y: THE LAST MAN, by the same writer. THAT one is screaming for a TV series, but it's gonna get movies instead, apparently (starring Shia LaBouef). It's another exceptionally gripping, exceptionally easy-to-follow book. Not that I'm pimping my livelihood at you or anything. ;-) Oh, just started on RUNAWAYS, eh? The first four issues spent much of their time reintroducing characters for not much more than a pointless cameo and the only character that's really made an impression is Wesley. There's too much going on -- structurally its a mess. It took me at least two issues to work out what the bother that Angel had gotten himself into. The re-emergence at the end of the first arc was at best gratuitous and at worst undid one of the most gloriously emotional moments of the television series. And now we're in some weird flashback sequence of issues pointlessly explaining what happened after the end of the final season, even though it offered one of the best climactic scenes of any series ever. It's not helped by a comparison with the glorious Buffy Season Eight which is elegantly written, is still re-engaging us with the new situation of the Scooby gang after all these issues and more importantly is properly funny. The scene in which each of the characters burst in on Buffy and ... I'm being careful so as not spoil it for people who are waiting for the collections ... was hilarious -- Xander's reaction was perfect and totally in character.
