Goldfrapp

|

She looks like Buffy's imaginary mad older sister. The one who worked in a diner, never married but occasionally saw a charming loser played by Paul Newman.

I'm talking about Alison Goldfrapp, of the band Goldfrapp, Mute's new darlings.

She reminded me of Dutch La Pat... flirting with Weimar, opera and lush soundtracks. Teutonic romanticism, quite un-British.

They played a short set (that shouldn't have been any longer), the audience loved it, I enjoyed the music and her voice... but it didn't have that 'oomph'. It lacked a bit of sex, a connection with the audience, it lacked performance. Perhaps I just prefer seeing a man go over the top. The way it was, it looked like a Sainsbury's check out girl had slipped on a few glittery items from her granny's closet for an evening of karaoke.

All through the show I thought about other things. How the guy I was with made me feel silly (not his fault). How I should let go. How all addictions are killing. How I can end this. How do you sever a limb?
