For ever

We kiss to shut him up and shut him out.

'How long has it been... ten?'

'Twelve. Twelve years,' I say. It seems like for ever. I watch him lift his champagne. I grip my beer.

We were seated in the Green Lizzard, a pub across the road from the Tivoli Theater. Full of rowdy young lads whose favourite passtime seems to be grabbing each other's arses and balls. All in a studly, manly beer drinking way, of course. If they could only see themselves.

He ain't heavy

|

Celebrating my dad's birthday, I told my parents and my dad's brother and wife about the week in Dublin knowing that my uncle and aunt (both novelists, songwriters, poets) would be interested in the theatre production.

Talking about Kurt Weill and Bertold Brecht, my dad and uncle burst into song - singing Mac the Knife and Cannon Song, in German - knowing all the damn lyrics, and parts of September Song, and other tunes.

'I love that guy,' said my uncle, talking about my father, 'which is fortunate, cause he's my brother.'

Oh don't ask why

|

Walking through Jodenbreestraat a few days back, a gypsy trio (accordion, double bass, violin) were doing 'Mac the Knife'.

And so I walked along the Amstel River, smiling to myself, humming Kurt Weill tunes.

My mobile beeps. It's B., in London: 'The pub keeps playing Bowie's version of Moon of Alabama.'

[ SPOILER ] Check this. Giles. Season 6. Epi 3, 'Flooded', he returns to Sunnydale. And the mark of Eygon is... gone!... We're meant to notice this. See how it's filmed in the dark, but he's in a t-shirt and there's just a bit of light on the arm where the tattoo was?

I just picked up my photos (the Canon ones) from the shop. Wow. Wow bloody wow. That's probably the highest success rate on pics per roll I've ever had in low light circumstances. I'd say 80%. That's unreal. Good camera/lenses and reading up on (concert ) photography has definitely paid off. Now I am extra pissed off the theater festival people wouldn't let me shoot the show properly (I wasn't allowed to take em, so I had to sort of sneak 'm from my seat). I only managed to shoot 2 colour and one b/w film. Haven't had the b/w developed yet, looking for a good place to have it done.

Oh you'll be wanting proof then?

Last night was lovely. Taking up two tables at the front in the venue (all the angels coming together for the final show), we adorned them with a little Playmobil pirate, and a glittery star.

On invitation we attended the aftershow and end-of-week-post-traumatic-theatre-disorder-band-farewell-cum-belated-birthday-party, and were delightfully treated to an extra song, just himself and himself: 'Life is a cabaret, old chum'.

One of the best things this week was bringing an old friend who has heard me yak on an on and on about the merits of this particular artist, but had never seen 'm before. He left all starry eyed and mesmerised, and a bit shaken - having undergone the 'I am going to sing in your face at point-blank' treatment.

Last night I defied house rules (the theatre festival seem to want to own everything, including images of this show... fuck em, I have a job to do) and tried out the new camera & lenses to photograph the show. I was happy with the speed of both lenses. Very fast focussing, even in such dark circumstances, and relatively quiet too. Shot two films furtively.

...course I'd already shot 140 digital pictures as well. *Evil snigger*.

SPEAK LOW
Kurt Weill / Ogden Nash

Speak low when you speak, love
Our summer day withers away too soon, too soon
Speak low when you speak, love
Our moment is swift, like ships adrift, we're swept apart, too soon
Speak low, darling, speak low
Love is a spark, lost in the dark too soon, too soon
I feel wherever I go that tomorrow is near, tomorrow is here and always too soon
Time is so old and love so brief
Love is pure gold and time a thief
We're late, darling, we're late
The curtain descends, ev'rything ends too soon, too soon
I wait, darling, I wait
Will you speak low to me, speak love to me and soon

Repetitive strain injury... it's just pain, you know, from sitting at the computer too much? But it's bad, I'm used to pain, but...

'Well, that's a bit sadistic, 'used to pain'? You're a sadist'

//that would be masochist, dear//

I'm not! I get migraines... I'm used to pain. I'm just saying this is worse. Women are used to pain anyway.

Oh and men aren't?

No. Women can take a lot more pain.

Oh well that's great. So men... men are just there to drink beer, get into fights with their mates and bring the money home?

//hey, you said it, not me//

Yeah, exactly... while we deal with life and bear your children!

Men... men, are capable of taking a lot of emotional pain.... and there's sensitive men too, you know!

//yes, I know you're sensitive dear, don't get all upset//

I just mean that women can take more pain. Not emotional pain. Physical pain.

Well... women can take sustained pain. If you punch a man, he'll get up. Hit a woman that way and she'll stay down. But sustained pain, yeah.

See, we agree!

'... you'll have a week in Dublin soon, to relax. Don't bring a lap top, and don't go to any of these internet cafes!'

//but I HAVE to check my mail//

We need new dreams tonight

| | Comments (1)

I listened to The Joshua Tree for the first time in what may be a decade.

I remember the first day I got it. I was travelling from Sasketoon, in Canada, back home and bought the album in a mall outside Toronto airport. I bought it on vinyl. And then I bought a tape to be able to listen to it on the flight.

joshuatree.jpg

I walked around the mall with my headphones on, getting lost in the music. After a while, I had to sit down, shopping was out of the question. The music demanded full attention.

It was the right album for the time, at the end of the 80s, that cold decade, the 'me' era.

The Joshua Tree was hot, and bothered. Not about 'me', more about 'us'. It said 'fuck you' to the 80s and embraced a future.

The other day we were talking about, what else, the 'current situation' and what the not so distant future may hold for us. Someone suggested September 11 was the real start of the 00's.

Listening to the Joshua Tree I can't help thinking that somewhere down the line there will be another such record. There has to be.

Midnight, our sons and daughters
Were cut down and taken from us
Hear their heartbeat
We hear their heartbeat
In the wind we hear their laughter
In the rain we see their tears
Hear their heartbeat
We hear their heartbeat
Night hangs like a prisoner
Stretched over black and blue
Hear their heartbeat
We hear their heartbeat
In the trees our sons stand naked
Through the walls our daughters cry
See their tears in the rainfall

From RTE's e-mail news: 13 people die on the (Irish) roads over the weekend.

Ireland has one of the highest death rates from road accidents in Europe. I remember feeling sick getting into the car with an Irishman with 6 pints on him. I argued and got 'How else am I gonna get back home' and 'I drive slowly' as a feeble, childish excuse. Coming from Holland where 'don't drink drive' is pumped into us, I just couldn't get my head around the country's drinking culture.

It's time for Ireland to grow up a bit. Relentless government campaigns definitely help.
