‘Mostly dry’. That doesn’t sound too bad then. I’m hopping over to the Emerald Isle for a day’s worth of photo recce (for a shoot next month), perhaps some shopping, and a late night 30 Seconds to Mars show. Not that I’m a big fan or anything, but I’m sure both band and audience will be a sight to see.

Talking about a sight to see… (Yeah, grasping at straws here) Torchwood S2e02… now that’s more like it! This director gave Barrowman much less time and space, which cut down on his showiness. Now all they need to do is clean out his ears… that’s the only reason I can think of why he is always SO MUCH LOUDER than the other actors. Or is it just the Tom Cruise school of acting?

Loved the Monster of the Week. The woman playing Beth did so awesomely and the steely eyed sleeper dad was just the right amount of creepy and silly.

VOX, Six Apart’s new blogging tool, is now open to everyone. I’ve been using it for a couple of months now and (as you may have noticed) it’s made me forget about this here MT-powered self-made blog that I’ve had for the last 7 years. Why? Because I, like everybody else, have less time to spare and want everything to be quick and easy at this point in my life. Maybe when I retire I’ll go back to hand-coding my thoughts in Notepad, but right now, I want VOX.

Vox doesn’t do everything I want. I can’t import delicious, last.fm, upcoming, etc like I do here, but it does all the basics really well. But most importantly… all my mates are there in my own little neighbourhood! With it’s privacy features, it’s perfect for the easy, ‘secret’ blogging of stuff you want only your best friends and/or your family to read. It’s free, so give it a whirl, and invite your mates or maybe your techno-phobe dad.

Hmm, that came out like a copywritten advertisement. It’s not. Honest.

So what am I gonna do with eachman.com? Well, I’m thinking of reverting back to prolific.org and making this an aggregate-only hub. I think I’ll be stripping this site of its current ‘design’ soonish.

My friend’s father (74) dad had a heart attack on wednesday. When they got him to the hospital, he was put on a trolley in a&e for three hours. When he was finally given a bed, he had another heart attack. He’s in intensive care now and stable at the moment. He had a triple bypass a couple of years ago – when he had his first (three, I think) heart attacks.

I’d get upset about the three hours waiting on a trolley if I weren’t pre-occupied hoping for a speedy recovery.

What creeps me out about places like Flickr is when people you don’t know, have never met, have never e-mailed with, ‘friend’ you. I wish there was a way you could ‘unfriend’ strangers. Or simply not allow it unless you give permission.

Dude, I’s SO not your friend.

I fully agree…

dont join myspace… its really bad there.
allen (link) – 30 March 2005 – 22:57

I think you can ‘unfriend’ someone on Flickr. Go to your list of contacts in your profile, and put your mouse over the contact you don’t like. You should get a message bubble that says you can change that person’s status….

but don’t use that on “modsue”…!!
ModSue – 30 March 2005 – 23:35

They need a “i want to watch this person’s photos” option..
ichris (link) – 30 March 2005 – 23:47

Modsue, only if you yuourself befriended them first and then want to undo it.
Caroline (link) – 31 March 2005 – 00:10

From the Flickr FAQ:
How do I remove a contact?
A: From your home page, go to ‘Your contacts’. This takes you to another page, where you should see your contacts listed. Select the contact you’d like to remove. Select ‘Profile’ on the right side of the page. Click the ‘Change’ link. At the bottom of the text click ‘Remove’.

Try that!
ModSue – 31 March 2005 – 00:42

Yep, you’r absolutely right. Dad damn Flickr creeps me out to. Sometimes it’s quite obsoluete
Seniorenman – 31 March 2005 – 07:55

Sue, I can’t remove other people’s contacts. You can only remove your own.
Caroline (link) – 31 March 2005 – 10:03

I guess I didn’t understand—you mean she put you on her list, and you want to be off of her list?

I need more sleep and more English lessons!

I know how annoyed you get when people are thick, so I am sorry for being so stupid…
ModSue – 31 March 2005 – 15:24

LOL. I am high maintenance, amn’t I?
Caroline (link) – 31 March 2005 – 15:26

To clarify: yes, they put me on their contacts list. (‘contacts’ is questionable too… am I their ‘contact’ if I don’t know them?) And then they make me their ‘friend’. How can you call someone you don’t know a friend?

People look at other people’s contacts and they might think ‘oh look, Caroline is their friend.’ When I’m not and don’t want to be.

Perhaps I am a little precious about the word ‘friend’
Caroline (link) – 31 March 2005 – 15:30

Ahh right.

I WAS going to say that there were three ‘levels’ (contact, friend or family.. well two levels but.. hmm)

I presume “contact” to mean I like this persons photos, or I have some form of contact with them (like “I read their blog”).

Maybe an “acquaintance” level is required??

Or change “Contacts” to “Favourites” or something???
Gordon (link) – 31 March 2005 – 17:55

Favourites would be a lot better, and only allow ‘friending’ when both parties agree.
Caroline (link) – 31 March 2005 – 20:40

This is why I hate almost all forms of social software.

I too value the term ‘friend’. I do not equate someone who will talk to me ‘til three in the morning about all sorts of, er, stuff with somebody I’ve never met in a one horse town in Texas who happens to like a photo I posted.

I think “Extremely Distant Acquaintance, Probably Crazed Stalker” would be a better term than “friend”.
Vaughan (link) – 01 April 2005 – 00:42

There is no option to put you only into the list ‘favourite fotographers’ There is only the option friend or family…so I wouldn’t put you into family either…Its simply to see your pictures right away.. not to say you are my friend but you could suggest a change of terms to flickr administration…or make the pictures only avaible to friends, which means you choose the people who can see it but thats pretty anti internet(everyone can see it) Its the same ‘problem’ on livejournal…
Sandra (link) – 01 April 2005 – 01:00

You don’t have to put people in ‘friends’ or ‘family’. You can just make them a ‘contact’, which still makes no sense to me, since they haven’t really had any contact with me, but is the better option.
Caroline (link) – 01 April 2005 – 08:33

I am at flickr and when I put you into contakts I have to choose wether you are a friend or family unless I didn’t understand anything. It is relly just to see easier you pictures: and a compliment for you to tell you I like your Pictures…
And I simply knew your blog and choose that liek that, all other ‘contakts’ are people that I knew online from a site like flickr called fotolog and we do evne orginize meetings so they qualifie more to the word friend evne if they are more good aquintances. And sometimes I jsut put random people that commented to mine or ‘friendet’ me.
Sandra (link) – 01 April 2005 – 19:21

I rest my case.
Caroline (link) – 01 April 2005 – 19:53

Ok I chequed…You are right…
I’ve taken you out of friends and made you a simple contakt which in reality just means you are a favourite.
It was a missunderstanding,I thought I ahd to click on either friends or family.
Thanks for pointing my error out.
hope you don’t mind I keep you as a favourite thought…
Sandra (link) – 01 April 2005 – 21:59

It’s official, our band doesn’t give a fuck about us. First they didn’t want us in the front rows. Now we’re not allowed to make more than one booking per tour. I.e. they want to get rid of their hardcore, traveling fans. They want new blood at gigs. Hardcore fans are tiresome. I know we are. We’ve also tirelessly supported the most uncool band in the history of music. And made them bluddy big.

Nope, they don’t care one iota. I knew that already, but now we all do.

Update: It’s like the ultimate midlife crisis. Instead of leaving their first wives, these men dump their first fans.

six comments:

S’been a bit of a kicker alright. Just…

Argh.

And the worst of it? No such limitations are sited on ticketmaster.com. So if you had the readies available, and the timing, you’d be able to catch every single US show, and get your tickets from ticketbastard.com

And there was me thinking an Irish band might give a shit about the Europeans…
Rogue – 28 January 2005 – 07:29

I’m so done with all this. I just don’t have the words to describe it. C… want to go for dinner or something coming sunday and get drunk? Looks like we’ll have some spare greens anyway. All that money I wanted to throw at U2, much lik the McPhisto incarnation did during the ZooTV tour. But they just don’t seem to want my money.
e – 28 January 2005 – 11:04

How will they ever check this. And what about my mum, my dad, my wife, my kids, my brother in law, my wife’s parents?
eric (link) – 28 January 2005 – 11:54

Ouch.

I’m not a big fan (but a fan nonetheless) and that sucks.
Gordon (link) – 28 January 2005 – 13:32

i know this must be beyond frustrating, but i seriously doubt that the intention was to stop fans going to multiple shows, the intention i think, was to thwart scalpers. the fact they successfully bought up hundreds of u2.com subs, however, is a moot point. all the bullshit with the unrefunded subs sucks dogsballs, and U2 should personally see it rectified. however, i think at this point in time, they have bigger, more important fish to fry.

oi, and don’t you dare stop writing U2 LIVE!
elmo (link) – 29 January 2005 – 15:05

We’ve known since Boston on the last tour that the band are tired of seeing the same faces in the front rows every gig they play. This isn’t a wild guess, both Bono and Larry have said so. I don’t blame them, I’ve seen the faces and I’d get tired of ‘em too. :) But does it have to be spoken out loud? ‘Hey fans, thanks for giving us a great life, now fuck off, we’re tired of your ugly mugs.’

Did anyone else receive an e-mail with a picture of a boy attached and the message ‘A BOY MISSING HIS PARENTS B’CAUSE TSUNAMI’, asking people to forward it to as many people as they can? Typical hoax stuff if you ask me. I think it’s a picture of the (mosquito bitten) Swedish boy who was reunited with his dad in a Thai hospital in the first few days after the Tsunami struck.

A thought that’s been going through my head a lot recently (which I should cherish and investigate — shallow as my everyday existence tends to be) is that everybody has their ‘prime’ time. Some hit it in their twenties, others in their thirties or later. I think I made a pretty good kid and kept it together in my teens and tweens. I don’t think I’m very succesful so far at being an adult.

My summer break starts on Friday. One more day to go.

Postman attempted delivering several packages while I was out.

Lovely Google adsense check arrived

Two blue tax envelopes arrived

It’s wasp season and it’s official: ‘they’re very aggressive this year’

‘Mac user’ still can’t operate iBook, ‘loses’ toolbar

Dad remembers I owe him loadsamoney

Rumour: U2 to play 3 gigs in The Netherlands next June

Dirty laundry pile higher than clean laundry pile

Let’s not mention the pile of dishes

The nice Pakistani gentleman four doors up the road does great clothing repair

I now have H&M brown pin stripe slacks cut to my ‘length’

I’d like (and am taking preliminary action) to move to another part of town

My neck/shoulders are killing me

My physiotherapist isn’t very good

I’ve been asked to play a mixed doubles tournament

My backhand needs work

My tennis shoes are too small

My service seems quite effortless this season

I haven’t seen a good gig in ages

Who’s going to delete my spam while I’m away?

Illustrations by Pat Andrea, texts by H.P. de Boer.
In Dutch only, I’m afraid.

My uncle is always looking for new gestures. I ‘did’ one for him the last time I saw him at my dad’s birthday and he took a picture of this ‘gesture of disgust’. I haven’t seen it yet, but Pat Andrea drew the image from the photograph and apparently it is featured in the book.
