Or to be more precise: my friend B. jumped a fence and hung around front- and backstage until he got busted and golf carted off the premises. But not until he’d taken a few cool pictures.

So tell me, where were you during Live Aid, 20 years ago? I was 22, doing work practive in Northern Ireland. I was working at Glebe House (kids holiday camp) on the Strangford Lough. I missed most of the television broadcast, because I was working, but we snuck into the tv room whenever we could to catch a glimpse. I was desperate to see U2 because I was a recent fan. I missed it, I think, or may have seen the tail end. What I remember most of the day was seeing a very dark blurry image of a band called INXS come in via satellite and being told by the resident Australian that they were really big in his country.

Hotpress announces Sinead O’Connor’s comeback.

Pray she keeps it together this time.

She’s still feisty:

“Religious songs with bad words, that’s the best way I could describe it!” she explained. “Been thinkin’ for years the religious area of music has a huge gap in it. Needs a bit of punky filling. I kind o’ had the feeling for years, that God must be pretty sick listening to a lot of the awful shite religious stuff there is out there. Reckon he or she’d like somethin a bit more thuggin. For thuggin big G.

“Like, if I was God, I’d be using a lot o’ bad words. Given all the shit people be carryin’ out in God’s name like. So that where I coming from on God and music. Musically speaking, to rescue God from religion.”

Yeah, that would be the typical response from a Dubliner. :P

I think she’s right about a lot of things she’s ranted about, but she’s so upfront about it, she puts people off. And for some reason, the people she puts off the most are her own kind. I guess they’re afraid of her. She’s ‘dangerous’, a true subversive. She makes people uncomfortable because she puts the finger on the sore points.

I think she’s the most talented singer to come out of Ireland, ever and she deserves more credit for her work. And I’m sad to say, (and this is very close to Godwin’s law) if she were a man, she would get it.
Caroline (link) – 11 February 2005 – 10:11

I think she’s brilliant. Everyone thinks she’s brilliant. And I think she’s got points to make. Except she’s been here before. And then she’s announced she’s quitting. Twice at this stage, I think.

It’s kind of a “get off the fence and get on with it”. We all know how talented she is and that she could have the world in her hand if she wanted to. It’s just that we tire of her because all she seems to do is posture, when she could do so much more.

And I disagree with the gender issue – it’s the posturing and the failing to follow up on what she’s done before.
tomcosgrave (link) – 11 February 2005 – 12:32

For the state of music, I’m glad: she has one oft hose voices that will always be a classic, and that makes everything she does original.

At the same time, it’s getting to the point where she’s limiting herself – laughter is the cure for subversity, and she opens herself unnecessarily wide for it, I think. For every point about God and religion that she makes that hits the nail on the head, there’s her on the front page calling for a National Delousing day.

That said, I’m still glad we’ll get something new from her.
