Progress

Ten years ago, when I built one of my first websites, it got mentioned first in the Irish Times, then in The Guardian. It was featured on the BBC, as well as appearing in most Internet magazines and books on the shelves at the time.

I’ve come a long way since then. Everybody I knew online back then has gone on to bigger, better, greater things. But none of them can boast this, I’m sure:

Whedonesque appeared in The Sun today.

Kubrick: “Fan – Crazy”

From ‘Citizen Kubrick’, The Guardian:

“The fan letters are perfectly preserved. They are not in the least bit dusty or crushed. The system used to file them is, in fact, extraordinary. Each fan box contains perhaps 50 orange folders. Each folder has the name of a town or city typed on the front – Agincourt, Ontario; Alhambra, California; Cincinnati, Ohio; Daly City, California, and so on – and they are in alphabetical order inside the boxes. And inside each folder are all the fan letters that came from that particular place in any one year. Kubrick has handwritten “F-P” on the positive ones and “F-N” on the negative ones. The crazy ones have been marked “F-C”.”

George Michael: Patience

George Michael’s Older (1996) is in my Top 10 favourite albums. So there. Now that that’s out of the way let’s tackle the long-awaited new album.

‘Precious’ won’t make my top 10 because it’s not really an album. It’s a collection of songs that goes on a little too long, has two old singles on it and sounds just a tad dated. So it’s good old fashioned George Michael schtuff then? Yes. ‘Amazing’, the single, has grown on me, ‘My Mother Has A Brother’ is the touching stand out ballad, but it’s the 7 minutes and 36 seconds long dance floor dark horse ‘Precious Box’ that I’ve been playing on repeat. This despite the fact that it sounds like a theme tune for a mid-90s TV show about the hard-core dance scene in, I don’t know, Sheffield. Yes, it’s got under my skin, as George himself sings in this tribute to… what? Satellite TV? You tell me (lyrics). At the end of the album, George bids the business that comes with music farewell. Here’s to many many future downloads. He may be ‘Through’, but he’s not finished.

Things I’ve done over the last couple of days.

  • Came home sick on Wednesday. Some kind of throat infection. Strep throat? Ugh.
  • Watched 23 episodes of the Sopranos. Still not sure whether I like it or not.
  • Tried to do DVD > VCD for someone. Failed. Grr.
  • Cancelled a lot of appointments. Still unsure what to do about the one I have today.
  • Was interviewed by The Guardian. Didn’t have a lot of interesting things to say (I had another, related subject on my mind and regrettably focussed on that in my answers), still got quoted. Whedonesque.com is not a Buffy the Vampire Slayer fansite. It is a community weblog about the work of writer, director Joss Whedon. Still, good job, Bobbie.
  • Felt disconnected from the sites I run, especially U2log.com.
  • Realised once again that having no new extra-curricular projects to pursue is not good for my well being. What, you thought this recent obsession with all things wireless and mobile is just a healthy interest in technology?

Sorry, no time to get all introspective. The UPS man was at my door just now with my new Dell Axim. That’s at least 4 days sooner than expected. Weeeeeeeeeeeee!
