Prol’s so glad to have

Prol’s so glad to have been an early adaptor. On line since late 93 (e-mail downloaded from a VAX though Kermit & zmodem), playing with Gopher and Archie throughout 94, discovering the www with Lynx and late 94 or early 95 the proud owner of Netscape 0.9. I still have it on the floppy disk it arrived on. Invention of the century? I think my first webpage was on line in April 95. Wish I’d kept copies of it all.

The Dutch are spending 100 million guilders (50 million dollars) on fireworks this New Year’s Eve. That’s insane. [ D ]

The USA is way ahead of Europe in internet usage. WAP (Wireless Application Protocol) will probably end that, as this continent’s mobile phones density is higher.

Is your computer ready for the big Y2k? Be prepared.

Christmas telly can be good, but I’d seen most of what was on. Rented Entrapment, Sean Connery wasted on the script and Miss Zeta-Jones (yawn), also got Wim Wenders’ The End of Violence (double yawn, Gabriel Byrne wasted in overly long meandering script). Has Wenders actually made anything decent since Der Himmel Ueber Berlin? I very much enjoyed a Wallace and Gromit style animated film about Robin son of Rudolf the Red Nosed Reindeer. Absolutely delightful but perhaps a little colloquial (British). Also enjoyed Roald Dahl’s gritty humour in Matilda… not just for the kids. Little Mara Wilson looks a lot like the younger Prol. Strange experience, looking at yourself. No, I can’t move stuff with my eyes. I think.

Person of the century. It’s hard to choose because so few of us actually are centenarians. Time magazine chose Albert Einstein. I don’t even know what the relativity theory is. Wanna tell me? Anyway, I think my person of the century is Nelson Mandela.

Oh for godsakes, just ban the fucking things.

Nicely designed Bond site. [ G ] An English version seems to be in the making.

No worries, Jason, I was being a dramaqueen. With a wink, naturally. :-) [ see entry 22/12 ]

Yaay, found a Dutch log that looks good!

‘Capturing the moment.’ That’s what art is about, I think. TV-maker Wim Kayzer is back with another ambitious project, a wonderful concept. His series for Dutch broadcasting company VPRO ‘Van de Schoonheid en de Troost’ (‘Of Beauty and Consolation’) deals with the moments that make life worth while. It’s a twenty-eight part series, featuring interviews with 26 artists, scientists, writers, philosophers and musicians. In part 27, on May 28, all the people involved meet. A book accompanies the series, and one of the musicians dedicates a concert to it on February 6 in the MCV in Utrecht and Germaine Greer decided to make her own film about the theme. The Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam will run an exhibition in connection with the series, from May 13 till July 7. I’ve just watched the first part in which all the people are introduced. It’s ambitious. It’s what I call great TV. I hope to see as many parts as possible.

Happy Christmas. It is raining,

Happy Christmas. It is raining, and it’s warmish. My flu turned out to be an allergy attack, so I’m fine now. I’ve got 2 vids and a bag of food and for the first time in months: some peace and quiet.

I like small sites. Not too sure about the content yet. Maybe cause adolescence is a lifetime ago.

MP3 of the moment: You’ve got this strange effect on me, Dave Berry’s classic creepy song covered by Belgian trip hop meisters Hooverphonic. [ amazon ]

Oh c’mon! Your biggest blunder.

Oh c’mon! Your biggest blunder. Don’t be shy, share! Don’t make me link to Wessel’s Book of Blunder’s again.

It’s been a while, but we could no longer resist. Got myself a new – but boring – domain name for Christmas. It’ll be my only prezzie, cause we don’t do Christmas in Casa Prol. Expect another 24 hours before the domain goes live.

I’m on this monolith‘s rickety cable service but have wisely kept the dial in account at, just because they’re cool. And they’ve got better mail servers. Now they’ve got a spiffy new look as well!

Experimental jetset. Black. Arty. Dutch.

They link to Flip Flop Flyin’ where you can find cute little minipops.

Extra extra. Prol’s the next logger to succumb to the flu virus! Sniff.
